Gringos<\/h2>\n

\nFirefly gringos driving their old cars
\nfrom what remains of their fear,
\nthey keep walking through dreams
\nacross the valleys of Baja California,
\nthe currents of the Pacific
\nseem to push them in opposite directions.
\nThe song of the lobster
\nroars softly in the cove,
\nchildren with cheeks reddened
\nby the Tijuana sun
\nburn across their backs,
\nthey swarm at dawn like kangaroo rats
\nin pursuit of dollar bills,
\ngather fruit with open hands,
\ndig and dig,
\nseparating the saguaro from the worm\u2019s root.
\nIn the background, the deceptive revelry
\nof the shacks
\nshrinks before the presence
\nof the assault rifle,
\nhardly an alley in which to take their time,
\nreturn to work
\nwith an apron in one hand, a cigarette
\nin the other, finish the day at Pall Medical
\nwriting prescriptions
\nfor war veterans,
\narms outstretched before Hanson
\nLagoon
\non some night that hurts a little less.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Golden Sauna<\/h2>\n

The rich young man staying under a false name
\nwhile humming hundred-dollar bills,
\nI am not him except in a few dreams,
\nbut I could sell him my surname,
\nalthough he is white and does not need it.
\nHe wears an enormous gold chain, walks in circles
\nlike someone pacing back and forth inside his prison of organs,
\nrecites Bob Kaufman on bread and water,
\nwithout even snorting devil\u2019s hair.
\nBrothels are thieves
\nof solo tragedies
\namong the clear minority of poetic militancy,
\nsocial climbers who come to heal themselves
\nwith lines and neon,
\na traffic of jolts
\nto help the calendars fall into place.
\nHe has turned the corner
\ntreading across the carpet of night,
\nstill unable to remember his name,
\nthe sign promises a show,
\nin the bathrooms
\nthere are cameras,
\nthere was never any food in this house,
\nonly the juice of banks, Bibles,
\nand solstices.
\nAmerica, I do not forgive you.
\nIf you are blown into the air, the vultures will burn
\nand bounce against the ceilings of saunas
\nfor white men,
\nunless time
\ncasts the first stone again
\nand we all go back to biting
\nour nails.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Larry Mullen<\/h2>\n

The fire spends the night and survives among the remains,
\nbeneath the bridge there are no names
\nor designer clothes,
\nblack holes of warm blood,
\ndense forests
\nto cross at night,
\nto dynamite the vein in stone forged
\nby a dark-skinned native,
\ndolls that glow in the dark
\ntrying to reach
\nthe promised kingdom.
\nThe smell of scarred skin, lips sliding
\nover one another
\nuntil they bite into business cards;
\nbeyond these walls the river is navigable,
\nthe homeland a trembling bird
\nat an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
\nOnce I whispered to you
\nthat I would be Larry Mullen in East Berlin,
\nsmiling beneath the sweat of the notes,
\nwait for me with a calcite-colored bouquet
\nat Cornavin,
\nimagine the scene:
\nI can leave it there without falling
\nto my knees,
\nempty myself onto the grass
\nlike a stream,
\nimagine death wearing different clothes.<\/p>\n

Rodeo<\/h2>\n

From that root,
\nthis sawed-off shotgun that prowls and digs
\nlike a guide dog,
\nthe million-dollar question with its hair tied back:
\nwhat use is the night
\nif beyond it there is nothing but a patrol car
\nwith its lights on?
\nSo make one false move
\nand you are a dead man
\nwith black hair and green eyes.
\nMiguel Arteche\u2019s song of the bishop,
\nwith its white hand,
\nthe undergrowth: what use is the night
\nif beyond it there is nothing
\nbut this trick of stairways
\nand fire?
\nAs that plot contracts
\nwith the voice before the trigger,
\nthe ash crosses the bridge
\nto let itself fall
\nupon the river.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Children of the Zoo<\/h2>\n

There are two lines for throwing oneself
\ninto this ravine:
\none for the orphans, the disabled, the sick,
\nthe mentally ill, the terminally ill, the debtors,
\nthose who gradually let everything go\u2026
\nThe other for those who repent on the subway,
\nthe suicides,
\nthe raped girls, the thieves,
\nthose who did not choose,
\nthe artists\u2026
\nI will not be the one to force you
\nto inhabit life,
\nbut become accustomed to the speed
\nand pretend you find yourself
\non that bench
\nbeside the absences.<\/p>\n

Boris Rozas<\/strong>. Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is an Argentine-Spanish poet based in Spain and the author of more than twenty poetry collections. His work explores memory, displacement, precarity, and everyday experience through a restrained, melancholic, and contemporary voice, attentive to those who inhabit the margins and to the forms of resistance found in ordinary life.
